EXPERT WITNESS

COMPUTER SCIENCE EXPERT WITNESS

Sanjay Ranka, Ph.D.

Distinguished Professor, University of Florida | Former CTO and Co-Founder, Paramark | IEEE and AAAS Fellow

Patent Litigation | PTAB/IPR | Software and Computer Systems

As a computer science expert witness, I provide independent technical analysis and testimony in patent litigation and PTAB/IPR proceedings involving AI and machine learning, cloud and distributed systems, computer architecture, databases, computer vision and advertising technology. My work combines more than 35 years of academic and industry experience with expert-witness experience for plaintiffs and defendants.

I have prepared more than 15 expert reports and declarations and have provided deposition and federal jury-trial testimony, including in 800 Adept v. Murex Securities.

I analyze both the underlying algorithms and their implementation in working systems, including how software components, processors, memory and networks interact. My work connects system architecture and implementation details to the technical questions at issue.

Computer architecture, GPUs and high-performance computing. Multicore and CPU/GPU systems, memory hierarchies, data movement, synchronization, accelerators and hardware/software interaction.

Databases and data systems. Database and storage architectures, indexing, data mining, similarity search, distributed data processing, and real-time analytics.

Computer vision and video/image processing. Object detection and tracking, camera calibration, sensor fusion, video analytics, and edge/server processing.

Advertising technology. Ad serving, user profiles and identifiers, behavioral targeting, cross-source data integration, online experimentation, campaign optimization and inventory-yield management.

HOW I ASSIST COUNSEL

My work includes early technical assessment, technical infringement and invalidity analysis, claim-construction support, source-code and design-document review, testing and benchmarking, expert reports and declarations, rebuttal analysis, and deposition and trial testimony.

I relate the technical evidence to the patent claims and the questions in dispute, examining component responsibilities, interfaces, data and control flow, performance, and implementation constraints.

My technical expertise is also applicable to trade-secret and other technology disputes involving proprietary algorithms, source code, confidential implementations and system performance

ACADEMIC AND INDUSTRY BACKGROUND

I am a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Computer & Information Science & Engineering at the University of Florida, an IEEE and AAAS Fellow, and a named inventor on 13 issued U.S. patents. I have authored or coauthored more than 350 refereed publications and served as principal investigator or co-principal investigator on more than $25 million in externally funded research.

As CTO and co-founder of Paramark (1999–2002), I led development of PILOT, a real-time advertising-optimization platform serving more than 10 million decisions per day at 99.99% uptime. This work combined software product development, distributed computing, online experimentation and optimization.

My research spans parallel and distributed computing, machine learning, transportation systems and connected-health platforms. It also includes scientific data compression and methods for managing large simulation datasets.

My coauthored books include Elements of Artificial Neural Networks (MIT Press), Modeling and Optimization of Parallel and Distributed Embedded Systems (Wiley–IEEE Press), and Dynamic Reconfiguration in Real-Time Systems: Energy, Performance, and Thermal Perspectives (Springer).

I earned my Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota and my B.Tech. in Computer Science from IIT Kanpur. Recognition includes the 2020 IEEE Technical Committee on Cloud Computing Research Impact Award and the 2022 IIT Kanpur Distinguished Alumnus Award.
